Lehi in the Bible? (Your Weekly Scripture Study Starter)

Happy Sunday, friend!

Let’s dive into this week's Come Follow Me reading: Jeremiah 1-3; 7; 16-18; 20!

Now Jeremiah’s name might sound a little familiar to you, even if you’ve never read his writings. Why might that be?

Because he’s mentioned in 1 Nephi as a contemporary of Lehi (1 Nephi 7:14)! So, as we’re reading about Jeremiah, we can keep in mind that he’s in Southern Judah (including Jerusalem) at the same time as Lehi, Sariah, Nephi, Laman, etc.

5 Key Events

  1. Jeremiah is called as a prophet in the southern kingdom of Judah during a time of spiritual decline (Jeremiah 1)
  2. The kingdom of Judah has turned away from God despite everything He’s done for them (Jeremiah 2-3)
  3. The people participate in religious acts, but are not improved by them (Jeremiah 7)
  4. God tells Jeremiah to live differently as a warning sign to the people (Jeremiah 16)
  5. Jeremiah struggles emotionally but keeps going (Jeremiah 20)

3 Key Scriptures

  1. Jeremiah 1:5
  2. Jeremiah 2:13
  3. Jeremiah 18:6

Questions your kids (or church class) might ask: Why does God tell Jeremiah not to get married if marriage is ordained of God?

In Jeremiah 16:1-2, Jeremiah writes, “The word of the Lord came also unto me, saying, Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.”

The important phrase in these verses is “in this place.” We don’t know where Jeremiah was. He may have been in his hometown of Anathoth (Jeremiah 11:21), in Jerusalem, or any other place in the southern kingdom of Judah.

But it seems clear that the Lord was saying not to choose a wife from the location he was then in, rather than a general command to never marry.

This week's conversation starter:

Read Jeremiah 1:5 with your teen, then ask: How do you think the world would change if EVERY single person believed what this verse says?
