Questions your kids (or church class) might ask: What does “Thy walls are continually before me” mean?

Isaiah 49:16 is a beautiful and popular verse in which the Lord describes how He will never forget His people. But it ends with a phrase that confuses a lot of people: “. . . thy walls are continually before me.” If we keep in mind that Isaiah was writing this from Jerusalem during a time of incredible political upheaval, it helps bring deeper meaning to that phrase. What happened to the Israelites when the walls of Jerusalem were destroyed? They were taken captive. What happened when the walls were strong? They were safe. So the fact that our “walls” are continually before Jesus could be a symbolic way of saying, “I am constantly aware of how you’re doing. Your trials, your successes, your fears, your joy. . . I am always aware of them.”

This week's conversation starter:

Read Isaiah 49:15-16 with your teen, then ask: How do you think it is possible that God and Jesus love us so much when they have so many children to be aware of?

Why might that be? Because he’s mentioned in 1 Nephi as a contemporary of Lehi (1 Nephi 7:14)! So, as we’re reading about Jeremiah, we can keep in mind that he’s in Southern Judah (including Jerusalem) at the same time as Lehi, Sariah, Nephi, Laman, etc. Watch this week's video here! 5 Key Events...

Even though Isaiah rarely says the word "covenant" he is talking about it constantly!! Whenever he mentions posterity, promises, a promised land, etc, that's...
