Longest wait EVER!! (Come Follow Me insights for 1 Samuel 8-10; 13; 15-16)

It's time to dive into this week's Come Follow Me reading: 1 Samuel 8-10; 13; 15-16!

Have you ever received a calling and then had to wait forever for it to be announced in church?

Well, my bet is that King David has you beat. Make sure to check out this week’s FAQ to find out how long he had to wait between the time he was called to be the future king and actually taking the throne.

5 Key Events

  1. Israel asks for a king to replace their system of judges (1 Samuel 8)
  2. Saul is chosen and anointed as king and shows great promise (1 Samuel 9–10)
  3. Saul disobeys the Lord by offering a burnt offering despite not having priesthood authority to do so (1 Samuel 13)
  4. Saul disobeys the Lord again by not completely destroying the Amalekites and all their possessions; the Lord rejects him as king (1 Samuel 15)
  5. David is anointed by Samuel as the future king (1 Samuel 16)

Questions your kids (or church class) might ask: How long was it between when David was anointed and when he became king?

In this week’s reading, David is anointed to become the king when he is still a boy. How long was it between that anointing and when he actually took the throne? Here are some clues:

  • 1 Samuel 16: David anointed to be king
  • 1 Samuel 17: David is still a “youth”, too young to serve in the army (had to be at least 20 years old according to Numbers 1:3)
  • 2 Samuel 5: David becomes king at 30 years old

So, depending on David’s age when he killed Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 (likely a teenager) and how long it was between his anointing and the Goliath episode, he likely waited somewhere around 15 years to become king!
